Ian Maatsen is set to leave Chelsea this summer and interest has now emerged from the Premier League in the form of Aston Villa.
For the Dutch sensation, the second half of this season was a highly productive period as he was on loan at Borussia Dortmund.
The Bundesliga club’s 22-year-old player appeared in 23 games, scoring three goals and providing assists for two others as the German team finished runners-up in the Champions League.
Dortmund is committed to retaining Maatsen on a permanent basis and will need to match the £35m release clause in the full-back’s Chelsea contract to achieve this.
Nevertheless, The Telegraph reports that the Bundesliga team is hesitant to make this move, which could potentially allow Aston Villa to make a move.
The report indicates that Villa have recently inquired about Maatsen and may consider incorporating the left-back into their squad in anticipation of the 2024/25 season, as the Premier League team is expected to make a return to the Champions League.
Lucas Digne and Alex Moreno are currently Unai Emery’s left-backs, and it is probable that one of them will depart if the Chelsea star transfers to Villa Park in the near future. Aston Villa is in a favourable position to acquire Ian Maatsen from Chelsea.
In order to adhere to the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations, Chelsea and Aston Villa must dispose of players prior to June 30. Upon completion of this process, both English clubs will be permitted to recruit new elite players.
